The Fragrance Price Catalogue
Compare prices · Verify authenticity · Find deals
If you have ever found a fragrance for 30% less than department store price and immediately wondered whether it was too good to be true, you are not alone. Here is exactly how the discount fragrance market works and why most of it is completely legitimate.
01
The grey market is not the black market
Grey market means genuine product sold outside the brand's official distribution channel. Retailers like Jomashop buy authentic fragrance from overseas distributors where prices are lower, then resell in the US at a discount. The bottle is real. The scent is real. Only the distribution path differs.
02
Department stores charge for the experience, not just the product
When you buy at Nordstrom or Macy's you are paying for trained staff, prime retail space, polished counters, and brand ambience. Online discounters have none of those costs. A 100ml bottle of Sauvage EDP costs the same to manufacture whether it sits at $132 in Macy's or $105 on FragranceNet.
03
Volume buying drives prices down further
Large online retailers buy in enormous quantities and negotiate lower wholesale prices than any single department store could. Those savings get passed to you. FragranceNet has been doing this since 1997, which is why they can offer sitewide discount codes on top of already-discounted prices.
04
The fragrance community has verified this for decades
Reddit's r/fragrance has hundreds of thousands of members who have collectively bought millions of bottles from discount retailers. The community consensus on which sites are trustworthy is thoroughly documented and updated constantly. ScentCatalogue's trust ratings are built on this collective knowledge.
Common myths, addressed honestly.
Things first-time discount buyers worry about and what is actually true
If the price is that low, it must be a fake.
A Creed Aventus for $50 is almost certainly fake. But a Creed Aventus for $325 instead of $395 from a Verified Trusted retailer is just a discount from a grey market source. Price alone is not enough to judge authenticity.
Legitimate discounts of 15 to 30 percent are completely normal.
The fragrance market has high retail markups. Discounts in that range from established retailers are expected and routine. Anything beyond 50% off retail on a premium fragrance should raise a flag.
Discount sites sell old, expired, or degraded product.
Many buyers assume cheaper means older or lower quality stock that sat in a warehouse for years.
Reputable discounters turn over inventory quickly and check batch dates.
Every batch code on a legitimate fragrance can be verified at sites like checkfresh.com. ScentCatalogue only lists retailers with documented fresh inventory practices. You can always ask a retailer for the batch code before buying.
You have no recourse if something goes wrong with a discount purchase.
The fear that a discount retailer will ghost you if the product is wrong or damaged.
Tier 1 retailers have strong return policies and responsive customer service.
FragranceNet, Jomashop, and FragranceX all have documented return processes and customer service teams. Your credit card also provides chargeback protection as a backstop. The retailers we mark Verified Trusted have track records spanning years of resolved disputes.
Buying grey market voids your warranty or means the brand won't support you.
Some buyers worry about losing out on brand services or limited-edition authenticity because the product came through unofficial channels.
Fragrance warranties are minimal and brands rarely interact with end buyers anyway.
Unlike electronics, fragrances have no meaningful warranty that a brand would honor through retail. The scent either smells right or it doesn't. Grey market status has no practical effect on your experience of the product.

The fragrance grey market is full of counterfeits, deceptive listings, and outright fakes. We built ScentCatalogue to give buyers a clear, honest picture of where to shop, what to pay, and who to trust. Here is exactly how we do it.
Our Mission
ScentCatalogue started as a simple frustration: why is it so hard to know whether FragranceNet or Jomashop has a better price today, and whether either of them is actually selling the real thing? We built the tool we wished existed.
We earn money through affiliate commissions when you click through and buy from a retailer. That means we make more when you spend more, which gives us every incentive to show you the lowest legitimate price, not the one that pays us the highest commission. Every retailer listing pays the same rate to us.
We do not accept advertising. We do not let retailers pay to improve their trust rating. We do not promote products we have not independently evaluated.
Our Rating System
Every retailer on ScentCatalogue has been manually reviewed against a consistent set of criteria. Ratings are updated quarterly and whenever the fragrance community surfaces new information. Here is what each tier means:
Authorized resellers or extensively community-verified retailers
These retailers either hold official brand authorization or have thousands of verified authentic purchases documented by the fragrance community over many years. Counterfeits from these sources are extremely rare and handled immediately when reported.
Established retailers with a positive but not perfect track record
These retailers have a solid reputation and the vast majority of purchases are authentic. Occasional issues have been reported and resolved. We recommend keeping your receipt and comparing the scent to a known authentic sample if you are buying an expensive bottle.
Retailers with documented authenticity complaints or limited history
We include these retailers for price comparison purposes but strongly advise extra caution. Multiple community members have reported receiving non-authentic product. If you buy from a Tier 3 retailer, do so only for fragrances you can verify independently.
Retailers we do not list and recommend you avoid entirely
We maintain a private list of retailers with confirmed counterfeit sales, fraudulent practices, or no-refund policies on fake product. We do not link to these retailers anywhere on ScentCatalogue. If you see a price that seems impossibly low on a site not listed here, treat it as a red flag.

Common Questions
Generally yes, with some nuance. Grey market means the product is genuine but sourced outside the official brand distribution channel, often from overseas markets where prices are lower. The product itself is authentic. The risk is that brands occasionally void warranties on grey market purchases and some limited editions may differ slightly by region. For everyday designer fragrances, grey market retailers like Jomashop are considered safe by the vast majority of the fragrance community.
The most reliable methods are smell, packaging, and batch codes. A fake will often smell slightly off, weaker, or noticeably different from a tester you have tried in store. Packaging on fakes frequently has minor errors in font weight, spelling, or finish quality. Every legitimate fragrance has a batch code you can check on checkfresh.com or parfumo.com to verify it is a real production batch. If something feels wrong, trust your instincts and contact the retailer immediately.
Prices change frequently and we update our database regularly but not in real time. A price on ScentCatalogue reflects the most recently confirmed price for that size at that retailer. Flash sales, coupon codes, and inventory changes can cause brief discrepancies. Always confirm the final price on the retailer's site before purchasing. If you notice a significant discrepancy, use the Report a Price button on any results page and we will update it.
Yes, through affiliate commissions. When you click a Buy Now button and complete a purchase, we receive a small percentage of the sale from the retailer. This is how ScentCatalogue is funded. Crucially, every retailer we list pays the same commission rate to us, so we have no financial incentive to rank one retailer higher than another. Our rankings are purely based on price and trust rating. We never accept payment to improve a retailer's trust score or listing placement.
We rely heavily on community input to keep data accurate and expand our fragrance database. If a fragrance you want is not listed, use the Suggest a Fragrance form on the search results page. For incorrect prices, retailer information, or trust ratings, use the Report an Issue link found on every fragrance page. Verified community members who contribute consistently may be invited to join our data review team.
Some fragrances, particularly from luxury houses like Louis Vuitton, Chanel Les Exclusifs, or independent brands like Byredo and Le Labo, are only sold through the brand's own channels or a very limited set of authorized retailers. In those cases we show the official brand website and any authorized stockists rather than forcing a comparison that does not exist. If you see a deeply discounted price for one of these brands on an unlisted site, treat it as a significant red flag.
Help us get better.
ScentCatalogue improves through community input. If you have bought from a retailer we list, spotted a fake, found a price error, or want to suggest a fragrance, we want to hear from you.
